One mark of genius is originality of thought. Do you believe Filippo was a genius? If so, which of the innovations presented in the book offers the greatest support for your opinion. If you don't believe his innovations were signs of genius, please suggest another historical figure you feel is a genius. Support your opinion with examples of their creative thought.
I do believe Filippo was a genius. One of the innovations presented in the book that shows this is him creating the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore. He was able to design something that seemed physically impossible . Also, it was built with no scaffolding or wooden support which seems even more unbelievable for a dome of that size. Through the building process Filippo was also able to build machines that we're used to transport materials to the Piazza and even a hoist that was way more complex and advanced than his time. Therefore, Filippo is a genius architect who was able to solve the problem of creating a massive dome during the Reinessance in Florence.
ReplyDeleteFilippo was a genius. The innovation that best supports this is the ox-powered crane he invented. This crane was a technological masterpiece for this era, using innovation that would not be fully replicated for centuries. This ox-hoist could lift tons of heavy building materials quicker than anything before it. The 3-speed system with reversible gears was proof of his technological genius, being unheard of in this time period.
ReplyDeleteI think that Filippo was a genius. In each contest he entered for the construction of the dome, his design ended up winning. He solved many of the problems that they faced during the dome's construction. His invention of the ox hoist and the castello allowed for the workers to place large loads at the towards the top of the dome fairly easily. He also made it possible to build the dome without centering, which many thought to be impossible. Filippo worked on the Santa Maria del Fiore for over a quarter of a century, incorporating his genius into every aspect of it.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that Filippo, much like many of his fellow architects and artists during the era of the Renaissance, could certainly be considered a genius in his field. It could be argued that being a genius does not simply mean having a great deal of intelligence, but also implies that one is creative and resourceful. The master who planned the construction of the world's largest dome often had to improvise in order to bring his vision to life, and he managed to do so. No one else had the idea or gall to build the structure without the crutch of scaffolding; however, Filippo not only dared to try his notion out at a great risk, but also carefully planned out his idea. When he encountered difficulty, he rose to every occasion, such as his creating the ox-hoist on his own. In addition, he was clever and knew how to get his way. For example, he pretended to fall ill simply to make Lorenzo look uninformed and foolish.
ReplyDeleteI think Filippo Brunelleschi can be considered a genius. He had plans for the Dome of Santa Maria del Fiore that everyone deemed impossible, but Filippo stood by them even through their criticisms. Filippo solved one of the many problems, which included the centering of the design of the dome. He thought that they could do away with the centering all together. Filippo was so confident that he did not wish to divulge his plans to the wardens because he was afraid of someone stealing his ideas. He also built many other inventions to solve the other problems that the design of the dome faced, such as the ox-hoist which was used to lift heavy materials into the air. Filippo was a genius who accomplished what everyone thought was impossible in the building of the dome.
ReplyDeleteI believe Filippo was a genius. An invention created for his work on the dome, the ox-hoist, best displays this genius. This invention allowed for heavey building materials such as marble to be lifted many stories into the air. At this time such a task seemed impossible, and it was not replecated again for many more years. Not only was this invention impressive for its time, it also solved one of the biggest problems faced while the dome was in construction because there simply was not the technology required for the task. Filippo, however, fond a way to lift the building materials much faster and easier than could ever be done before.
ReplyDeleteI believe Filippo was a genius. He came up with his own plans to construct the world's largest dome, which was to be built without any wood centering. This was all successfully achieved in a time in which there was barely a fraction of the technology that is available to architects and craftsmen today. This idea was among many other original ideas that Filippo had. One can infer that he had many original thoughts because he was so secretive and untrusting with his work. Without a genius like Filippo, the dome of the Santa Maria del Fiore might not still be standing today.
ReplyDeleteFilippo Brunelleschi was a genius because of his originality of thought and his array of creative architectures. Throughout his career, Brunelleschi came up with many innovative ideas that did the impossible and in the end, resulted in the completion of the Santa Maria del Fiore. Perhaps his most revolutionary idea was the ox-hoist that was used to lift up sandstone beams weighing 1,700 pounds each to the cupola of the dome of the Santa Maria del Fiore. During the construction of this building, Brunelleschi was confronted with the huge problem of getting the heavy building materials high above the ground to where they were needed for building. Instead of cowering from this challenge, he designed a machine that would be powered by ox, instead of people. After its construction, the ox-hoist proved itself to be an extremely valuable and necessary tool. “Before the dome was complete, the hoist would raise aloft marble, brick, stone, and mortar weighing an estimated 70 million pounds” (King 70). This powerful machine is but one of many examples of Brunelleschi’s genius-ideas that were able to solve seemingly insurmountable problems.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Filippo Brunelleschi was a genius. I agree with Rebecca Van Kirk in that the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore was his greatest work. He was able to solve the mystery of how to build a dome of such capacity without centering. He also did not use scaffolding or wooden supports, which was astounding. Filippo not only came up with the design for the dome, but also designed tools, such as the ox hoist, that made building the dome much easier.
ReplyDeleteI think that Filippo Brunelleschi was a genious because he was very original with his ideas. He was able to make huge feat in art by working out the pronciple of a vanishing point and going on to make the very first perspective drawing, but perhaps his greatest stroke of genious came when he designed the dome for the new cathedral, Santa Maria del Fiore. This was extremely unprecedented because no one had ever had an idea like it. He figured out a way to get rid of centering, which was a huge architectual feat considering that even the smallest domes at the time used it. He also conjured up a way to avoid scaffolding and used tools of his own invention. His ideas were on an entirely different thought level, high above the other architects of the time. That's what made him a genious.
ReplyDeleteFillipo Brunelleschi is a genius because he was relentless in his pursuance of excellence. Fillipo’s model of the dome was bold, and it embodied a dome without visible center supports or scaffolding. A genius is someone who has vision. Fillipo showed extraordinary and unparalleled vision by creating the ox-pulley system to transport heavy materials as well as the castello to move materials latterly. Fillipo’s design incorporated an invisible buttressing structure which employed the use of sandstone chains. These chains were needed to counteract the compression and tension in order to contain the horizontal stress produced by massive domes known as “hoop stress.” The successful construction of a dome of unprecedented size is the essence of Fillipo Brunelleschi’s genius. The “herringbone brickwork,” a complex brick structure designed by Fillipo, served as a self-supporting arch without wooden supports or centering. Fillipo defies problems through intellectual innovation remarkable machinery. Though, every genius has trials and tribulations, and Fillipo surely faced the latter when his first patented design, “Il Badalone.”This was a ship that sank along its voyage along with the 100 tons of marble it had been transporting. In the end, Fillipo came out triumphant, as the dome of the Santa Maria del Fiore was completed shortly after his death. I agree with Emma Thomas’s statement, “It could be argued that being a genius does not simply mean having a great deal of intelligence, but also implies that one is creative and resourceful.”
ReplyDeleteFilippo Brunelleschi can be considered a genius because of his creativity, imagination, and the innovative ideas that made the building of the dome of the Santa Maria del Fiore possible. He refused to back down from the challenges that would have intimidated others, instead using his creativity and his very original ideas to overcome obstacles. When it became clear that lifting the heavy stone, brick, and marble materials that were essential in the building of the dome was a challenge that Filippo had to overcome in order to build the dome he imagined, Brunelleschi developed the ox hoist, a machine that made the lifting of these cumbersome materials possible. In addition to creating a revolutionary tool that relied on the strength of oxen to power it, Brunelleschi was also able to build the dome without visible scaffolding or center supports. Eliminating these supportive structures in the building of his large dome was a major accomplishment, especially considering that even the smaller domes of that time required them. He was resourceful and creative, unstoppable in his work towards the completion of his vision.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Filippo Brunelleschi was a genius. Two things that really make him stand out as a genius are that he created the enormous dome for the Santa Maria del Fiore and he created a very useful invention called the ox-hoist. He was able to construct the dome with no wooden centering, this had never been done before, and he made it the largest dome to ever be constructed. In addition, his invention of the ox-hoist was so important because it allowed heavy work loads to be transported up to the workers, and then was able to easily switch gears and then transport heavy loads back down. This was all done by a simple gear shift so the workers did not have to rearrange the oxen or do anything of that sort. Filippo's various ideas and plans were totally different than anything anyone had ever heard or seen of in that time period, and because of all his genius ideas the dome was successfully built and is still standing today!
ReplyDeleteFilippo Brunelleschi is a genius because he never quit in his quest for excellence. One great achievement wasn't enough, he strived for excellence and didn't settle. After Filippo Brunelleshci lost the door contest, he continued on to design the dome for the Santa Maria Del Fiore. His design would help construct the world's largest dome at the time. His design for the dome was a new one, never seen before, there would be no wooden centering which seemed an impossibility at the time. The dome was also built without any visible center supports. In order to help raise the tools to the masons, Brunelleschi invented the ox-hoist. The ox-hoist helped raise and lower the tools in a more effecient manner than ever seen before. Brunelleschi's designs and innovations were well before his time. His ideas help inspire inventions in today's world. Brunelleschi's strive toward excellence is still admired today, because after hundreds of years, the glorious dome still stands today.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Filippo Brunelleschi is considered a genius for two reasons regarding the dome for the Santa Maria del Fiore. The first reason is that he planned and created the largest dome in the world, but it is hard for humans to get all the heavy dome objects up to where the dome is being built. Which brings me to my second point, the ox-hoist he invented to aid in the building of his dome. This ox-hoist was a major contribution to his building because now he could lift large and heavy objects and easily transport the heavy objects. The way the ox-hoist was invented brings out how creative and innovative Brunelleschi is. He created a simple gear shift so that it is easy to lift up the heavy objects and bring it down. Filippo's ideas and inventions were one of a kind in that time period which shows how much of a genius Filippo is.
ReplyDeleteI believe Filippo is a genius. He was able to defy the beliefs of his day by buidling the dome. He also built the latern hoist, which featured a pulley system, a counterweight, and a braking system. The braking system was so unique because it allowed a load to be suspended in midair. This particular hoist had to small but also have the strength to lift many tons. It takes a creative genius to be able to design something like this that had never been seen before.
ReplyDeleteIt is clear to me that Filippo is a genius. He created a dome using many of his own inventions to make it as efficient as possible. The designs were all his own creations that were so creative and complicated that it is hard not to think of him as a genius. One of the designs that shows Filippo's intuition was the ox hoist. He thought of a simple and easy to maneuver solution to lift heavy objects. This invention made it possible for the workers to lift and lower heavy objects without having to change the oxen's direction; they were always moving clockwise. Filippo was able to design a reversible wheel to keep them from doing extra work lowering the objects. This is just one of the examples of the many amazing inventions that deem Filippo a genius.
ReplyDeleteI also believe that Fillipo is in fact a genius. We can see this because he not only used innovative systems in the design of the dome, but also made inventions that allowed him to do so. An example of this includes his use of herringbone brickwork in conjunction with the invention of the oxen hoist. The way the bricks work with and against each other in herringbone brickwork allows the dome to be self supporting, much like an arch. The oxen hoist was much needed in the construction of the dome, particularly in the brickwork. Because of the dome's height and the weight and size of the building materials, they needed something to raise these materials to the nessicary height. The oxen hoist was similar to an invention used in the past but what made it significant was that it allowed them to both raise and lower materials without having to turn the ox around. This made construction much more efficient. Using this combination of ideas along with a few others, Fillipo was able to build the dome without centering it, something that was unheard of at this time. True proof of his genius can be found in the fact that his use of new ideas and inventions allows this dome to remain standing even today.
ReplyDeleteFilippo Brunelleschi was in a way a genius. He had the makings of one: skill (in his field), creativity, confidence, and he was not scared to cross society's ideas with his own. At first, Brunelleschi let his arrogance and stubborn unwillingness get in his way of showing the world his genius (example: when he refused to work with Lorenzo)but he soon learned to cope. Brunelleschi, while working on the Dome, also created useful tools to help him achieve his goal. I think when he took his advanced theoretical knowledge and took in his surroundings then put it all together to create the ox-hoist was brilliant. Not to mention he then improved the crane known as the "stella" to the "castello" by giving the machine a turnbuckle that greatly helped the amount of control over the crane. Lastly, most of Brunelleschi's inventions lasted decades and the dome he helped create still stands. (But like most genius's his creativity and the credit he deserved was taken)All in all I believe Brunelleschi ended his life as a genius.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that Filippo Brunelleschi was a genius. By the definition of genius, it is clear that Filippo fits the description; but he also shows his architectual and all-around genius by taking on the grand task of constructing the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. He used his own new innovations and inventions to more efficiently create the dome of this beautiful cathedral. Filippo used his genius mind to create the ox-hoist which helped move the bricks up to the nessecary height that was needed in the construction of the dome. This new invention also sped up the very long building of this dome. "The obvious benefit of this gear change was that the a great deal of time was saved between each ascending or descending operation." (King 60) This time saving innovation aided the workers in moving the bricks and other heavy components of the dome in ways that were previously unimaginable. Filippo's inventions that were made to aid in the construction of the dome continued to benefit architecture and construction later throughout his time. His obviously extraordinary intellectual talents shined through throughout the construction of the dome and shined through in the rest of the life of Filippo Brunelleschi.
ReplyDeleteI honestly believe that Filippo was, in fact, a genius. This is shown through his creativity and resourcefulness. He found an incredibly innovative way to create the dome to the Santa Maria del Fiore. It may have sounded a little crazy to most, but he had the drive and courage to support his amazing idea. He also created and ox hoist that was used to lift the bricks. Many might have given up on the project when faced with such an obstacle as lifting heavy bricks, but not Filippo. He created his own invention to not only overcome this obstacle but speed up the process. I think that through these things alone, Filippo Brunelleschi can most definitely be considered a genius.
ReplyDeleteI believe Filippo Brunelleschi is a genius for two main reasons. First, he came up with an original plan of how to construct the largest dome in the world. His use of different building techniques, such as creating a circular skeleton for the actual octagonal structure of the dome to lie over, was truly amazing. This was very important because this allowed the dome to have no beams running through it. He is also a genius because of his use of materials and the transportation of them. He knew that in order to ensure the dome’s stability, he had to use the best of the best materials, including limestone, bricks and mortar, in the best way possible. To make the use of these products possible, he had to create a machine to hoist the material up in the air. This machine was the ox hoist. As you can see, Filippo is a genius because of his architectural plan and his use of materials.
ReplyDeleteFilippo was clearly a genius, seen through his numerous innovations. His methods of constructing the Dome were eye opening to architects and engineers everywhere. Solving the problem of transporting heavy materials high up on the construction site brought out Filippo's brilliance and expertise. The ox-hoist proved to be the "unheard-of machine" that was "one of the most celebrated machines of the Renaissance". It was a technological advancement that was ahead of its time. This demonstrates how Filippo was a true genius; he created a device that not only helped tremendously with construction in his time, but was the foundation for many advancements and inventions to come.
ReplyDeleteFilippo was a genius, in every aspect of his life he had a new and unusual way of viewing things that led him him to brilliant innovations that helped him revolutionize architecture. I believe one of the best examples of his genius was his ox-hoist. His innovation of the ox-hoist allowed workers to move millions of pounds of materials for the dome to very high heights. The invention did this by using oxen rather than men to power the hoist. in addition, the ox-hoist had a way to reverse the material basket's path without having to stop the oxen, this save a lot of time. before Filippo there was nothing like the ox-hoist, its' invention would have dramatically increased the rate of construction and decreased the amount of needed man power. Its' intricate design was like nothing previously done before, probably using ideas from Romans as well as astute observations made by Filippo, Filippo was most certainly a genius, showing it in every aspect of his life from his innovations to his pranks.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Filippo was a genius. First, he was able to construct the revolutionary "ox-hoist" which enabled him to lift tons of material to the top of his dome. If he was to build the dome without scaffolding, this would have been the only method of transportation for the bricks and mortar. Second, Filippo was actually able to construct the dome in the first place, something that had never been dome before without scaffolding. By building the dome and defying all the odds, he was able to pave the way for the future of agriculture. Thus, these two instances prove that Filippo was indeed a genius.
ReplyDeleteThere are several reasons to believe that Filippo Brunelleschi is a genius. As it states on the cover, "how a renaissance genius reinvented architecture," Filippo had many original ideas and inventions including his daring solutions for the dome and his "some unheard-of machine". Filippo's suggestion to do away with the centering in the building of the dome was "an astounding proposal". Previous to this idea, every dome had a centering and it was unheard of to do otherwise. In the summer of 1420, Filippo began working on an incredibly helpful innovation, the ox-hoist. It was the first animal powered machine to carry large loads of building materials hundreds of feet off the ground. On average, it hoisted fifty loads a day. This innovation was "centuries ahead of the technical understanding of the time". For Filippo's work on the dome and his incredible invention of the ox-hoist, I believe Filippo was a genius.
ReplyDeleteFillipo Brunelleschi was clearly a genius. Brunelleschi built many innovative machines, but the ox-hoist was his greatest and was 'centuries ahead of the technical understanding of the time(Ibid.,524).' The ox-hoist was a machine built to raise heavy loads to great heights in the air in order to complete his method of scaffolding without centering. His usage of changing gears from up to down surpassed both his competition and the technological understanding of the time. The most probable source for his inspiration comes from scanning and studying devices used in the cathedral throughout his life. During his childhood, he saw the different types of machines used while building the cathedral, which influenced his style and contributed to his success later in life. His studying of the machinery, critiquing them, and creating greater machines accurately depicts his genius.
ReplyDeleteFillipo was a genius. He came up with the ox hoist to solve the dome problem. He was also an innovative and creative architect. The dome was one of his great works to prove that.
ReplyDeleteI believe Filippo was a genius for several reasons. One of these reasons is that he created the ox-hoist. This was different than other other machines created for a similar purpose. His ingenius creation could lift materials both up and down without changing the directions of the oxen, which saved a lot of time. This innovation was a major component of the completion of the dome. The design was "centuries ahead of technical understanding of the time" as mentioned by King on pg. 60. This machine surpassed machines of this time. Brunelleschi also did the unthinkable by createing a dome with out centering. It was an amazing feat. He also did this in his own ingenius was of using the herringbone brick technique. This technique, even though it had it's weak points, reduced the inward thrust created by gravity. That was inperative if his dome was to stay aloft. The herringbone technique would most likely have not been used without Filippo's thinking. Clearly as seen by these examples , Filippo Brunelleschi was truly a genius.
ReplyDeleteFilippo was clearly a genius. The greatest proof of that is his ox-hoist that he built specifically for lifting incredibly heavy objects and placing them in the desired spot with amazing accuracy. This innovation was so great as to inspire some of the most famous architects and engineers in history such as Leonardo da Vinci. As a result of the genius innovation, 70 million pounds of building material was able to be put in place. But what was even more remarkable about his invention was the ability to be reversed which was never possible before. Brunelleschi undoubtedly changed the future with his genius mind and innovations.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Filippo Brunelleschi was a genius of his time, and would still be considered a genius today. He came up with many original and creative ideas, one being his method of perspective. I think his greatest work was the hoist he built for lifting extremely heavy objects. In that time the building materials were of course limited so he had to be incredibly smart. He must have possessed a lot of knowledge to be able to create such an object. His invention inspired many great architects after him. This invention helped him to create the beautiful dome of the Santa Maria del Fiore, which was also a genius idea of his.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Filippo was a genius. He had his own unique perspective on the world and as a result he developed many innovations that altered the way people perceived and imagined architecture. One of his most ingenious contributions was the ox-hoist. With it, he hoped to create “great and wonderful things”. Its original use was to raise and lower the mason’s tools in a faster, more efficient manner. The contraption, which was first fashioned in 1420, was made mostly of a large elm tree. The concept was a large, helical screw that moved based on an animal’s motion. A maze of ropes, gears, and wheels allowed for heavy loads to be raised to the workers. Nothing of this fashion had ever been dreamt and executed successfully before, and production of the dome increased radically. Brunelleschi was an innovator and a brilliant man.
ReplyDeleteI do believe Filippo was a genius. Filippo's genius mind created the world's largest dome that still stands today. His contruction of the dome and ideas of building it were unheard of in his time. He even invented the ox-hoist which was "designed to raise heavy loads far into the air with maximum speed and efficiency" (King 65). His invention helped change the future of architecture.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Filippo was a genius for two reasons. First, he built the Santa Maria del Fiore, the world's largest dome, but it wasn't just the fact that he built it, it was how he built it. He didn't use scaffolding or a wooden center, and there aren't any visible beems. Second, he invented many new machines and architectual techniques while building the dome. The ox-hoist and circular skeleton for the dome are examples of this. The ox-hoist made transportation of extremely heavy loads up to the top of the dome easy, and the circular skeleton gave the massive dome a solid base. I believe that a person is considered a genius when they create things that help man-kind for a long time, and I think Filippo met this criteria.
ReplyDeleteFilippo Brunelleschi was most definitely a genius. Fist of all, he came up with the design for the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. The dome of this cathedral was a remarkable innovation in the fact that it was to be constructed without any centering. Not only did he create the idea for this extremely architecturally advanced dome, but he invented machines to help actually build it. Of al the inventions, his most important was the ox-hoist. This hoist enabled tremendously large masses to be lifted into the air efficiently. The ox-hoist is considered one of the most noteworthy inventions of the Renaissance because it was so many years ahead of its time. Filippo’s combined understanding and knowledge in the fields of architecture and machinery truly make him a genius.
ReplyDeleteI believe Filippo Brunelleschi was a genius. He created the design for a dome larger than any of it's predecessors, and managed to construct it without centering- an idea that hadn't been approached before. Most architects prior to Brunelleschi had believed that without scaffolding, a dome would collapse in on itself, unable to sustain its own weight. However, using his own modern techniques, Brunelleschi was able to disprove what so many had thought to be true. In addition to being a pioneer in the field of architecture, Filippo also created inventions that helped him build his masterpieces. The ox-hoist is the most notable of his gadgets. Thanks to the hoist, heavy materials such as bricks were able to be lifted to the top of the dome so as to be worked with. With his brilliant mind and incredible skill set, Filippo Brunelleschi reshaped the world of architecture as it was known, which is something only a true genius could accomplish.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that Filippo Brunelleschi was a genius in the field of architecture. He worked alone and came up with his own plans to construct one of the most complex domes in history. An example of one of his genius inventions is the ox-hoist used to transport heavy building objects up to the dome. It shows Filippo's pure genius and creativity with such a big, complex design. For instance, Brunelleschi designed his hoist so that the path of the oxen didn't have to change when the loads were raised and lowered.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Filippo Brunelleschi was a genius because of the originality of
ReplyDeletehis thoughts. The innovation that offers the greatest support of my opinion is
the ox-hoist. Brunelleschi invented the ox-hoist to lift heavy stones to the
height required by the dome. This innovation shows that Brunelleschi was a
genius because of the originality and cleverness put into the creation and
construction of the hoist.

I believe that Brunelleschi was a genius due to his invention of the ox hoist. This allowed him to lift heavy objects to the top of his dome. Also, the circular skeleton was another invention of his that was completely innovative. These orinional inventions prove that Brunelleschi was indeed a genius.
ReplyDeleteFilippo is a genius. He constructed many inventions that were completely new to his time-period. Brunelleschi's most impressive innovation is the ox-powered hoist. The hoist was an original production that should be considered a gem. The crane could not be duplicated for a great period of time, due to Filippo's genius. The machine itself consisted of a three-speed system, that held the power to lift building supplies with great speed. The machine surely represents Filippo's advanced mind.

ReplyDeleteFilipo Brunellschi was a genius of his time. His greatest invention that supports this statement is the creation of the ox hoist. This new creation was able to lift heavy objects extreme heights allowing the construction of the dome to move more quickly than it ever could've without the ox hoist. This invention was also one of the first examples of cranes. They would later be developed into what we have as cranes today, but Filipo was the first of his time to make one. Clearly, Filipo's mind was advanced for his time, and the ox hoist was just one of his many great inventions which could support the idea of him being a genius for his time.
ReplyDeleteI believe Filipo Brunellschi could be labeled as a genius of his time for his invention of the ox-hoist. However, I believe his invention was more of a supplement for the greatest component of building the dome, the castello. The castello was created by one of Brunellschi's rivals Antonio da Vercelli. I believe that Antonio da Vercelli is the true genius because of his invention which did all of the positioning of materials needed for the dome. The castello was a crane and was able to raise and lower materials much like the ox-hoist (however, this use for the castello was extremely overshadowed by the Brunelleschi's ox-hoist). It also was able to guide those materials in a sideways motion a thing which the ox-hoist lacked. The castello was very reliable because only one man was needed to control it unlike the ox-hoist which needed constant guidance from the workers on the cupola to maneuver it. Although the castello was not as elaborate as the gear-like wheels used on the ox-hoist, it is original for its use of a turnbuckle, a horizontal cross-beam, and counter-weights to move it in the ways that was needed. Brunellschi could be considered as a genius for his ox-hoist which is impressive for the use of new methods, I strongly believe that Antonio da Vercelli is true and overshadowed genius for his invention of the castello which did all of the positioning of the materials needed to create the dome.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Filippo Brunelleschi truly was a genius. The originality of his thought and innovation is the sign of a master of creativity. The way he was able to create the largest dome of all time without the use of centering is incredible. One of the most remarkable inventions created by Filippo in my opinion that expresses his genius, was the ox-hoist. This invention solved the immense problem of how to transport heavy materials for building to such tremendous heights. The design for the ox-hoist was like no other and demonstrates his unending thought. The most ingenious aspect of the design was the reversible gear. This allowed for the hoist to be reversed even though the cattle moved in a continuous clockwise direction. With this innovation, Filippo significantly reduced the amount of time that it would have taken between the ascending process and the descending process.
ReplyDeleteBrunelleschi was most likely a genius. This claim of superior intellectual ability can be supported by his almost miraculous architectural creations. Many of his innovative methods of building and painting were maverick ideas for his time and had no precedents. An architectural marvel of his that comes to mind as new and effective is the ox-hoist. This complex method of lifting heavy loads to towering heights, although never attempted, proved to be very useful in the construction of the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore. This invention, among others, show that Filipo Brunelleschi was, indeed, a genius.

ReplyDeleteI believe that Filippo Brunelleschi was a genius for many reasons. One of those reasons is that he was able to build a very successful dome for his time without any scaffoldings or wooden support for the center of the dome. Filippo was said to be ahead of his time which is shown by his many other inventions such as his new pattern of brickwork, the ox-hoist, and many other ideas of things he tried to invent. Filippo also pulled a stunt that showed his cleverness when he pretended to be ill so that his nemesis would not be able to work with him on the dome anymore. Filippo was always creating new models and ideas for any competition on the dome and was very dedicated to the building of the dome, and because of the success and dedication he had shows how great of a genius he really was.
I believe that Filippo was a genius because he was able to envision and create the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore. Along with building this dome without scaffolding or wooden supports in the center, Brunelleschi had many other brilliant innovations including the Ox-Hoist. This invention allowed heavy building materials to be lifted more efficiently to the tops of buildings. Brunelleschi was a genius because he wasn't afraid to think outside of the box and take risks. Through his bold ideas he created amazing inventions that made work more efficient and he created a dome using a method no architect had ever used before.
ReplyDeleteFilippo was a genius mainly for his deviceful creations to construct the dome of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. The most breathtaking being the Ox-Hoist. Brunelleschi's new machine could expedite the process of elevating the marble and other materials to build the dome of the cathedral. The invention was so advanced for that time that workers were shocked at the efficiency. Filippo's hoist reinstated hope that this dome could be raised and the cathedral finished.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Brunelleschi was a genius because he was forward thinking, creative, and determined. The ox- hoist was a major invention of Brunelleschi's and was a great example of his genius. Because Brunelleschi found the machines of the time inadequate for raising and lowering the heavy materials needed to build the dome, he decided to invent a new ox-driven hoist to make building more efficient. The hoist consisted of a complex system of gears, screws, pulleys, and wheels that worked together and enabled workers to quickly send large blocks of stone and other materials high into the dome. The impressive design of this machine was unlike anything builders had ever used before and it was "centuries ahead of the technical understanding of the time." In addition to inventing the ox-hoist, Brunelleschi also figured out how to successfully construct the support system for the dome. Because his ideas were so unique, the other builders of the dome had trouble understanding and replicating his complex designs without his help. Brunelleschi was a true genius because he introduced the world to many new and inspiring ideas that continued to influence builders throughout time.
ReplyDeleteFilippo Brunelleschi was a genius through his originality of thought, his creativity, and his persistence to make his innovations work. One mark of his genius was the construction of the dome using his technique of herringbone brickwork. This kind of brickwork used bricks supporting each other as well as working against each other to support the dome on its own without the use of wooden beams to hold the structure together. This not only revolutionized architecture but revolutionized art with the beauty of the dome itself. This was work of such genius that not only was he outgoing and completely ahead of his time, but his construction of the dome was a cornerstone in the development of modern architecture. He was not only a genius in an artistic or architectural sense but also in a practical sense with his invention of the ox hoist. This invention allowed things much to heavy to be hoisted into the air by simple rope and pulley to great heights which helped in the construction of his dome. Brunelleschi was clearly a genius in any respect because he was a genius in architecture and practicality but also in his effort to make his work better than anyone had done before him.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Filippo Brunelleschi was truly a genius. He successfully built a dome during a time period where no one knew how to do so. Filippo is also regarded as the inventor of the method known as perspective, which is a concept that is still very much alive today because he understood the mathematical parts of this concept. This shows that Filippo was a genius in that he was ahead of his time and more advanced. It also showed his originality in thinking.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, Brunelleschi was not only a genius of his time, but he left a lasting impression with his one-of-a-kind originality that has helped educate architects to this day. His work ethic and personality led to him being the artist he is remember as today. He created techniques and methods that differentiated his work from his competitors. The one innovation about his work that stood out to me was the ox-hoist. Even though this contraption didn’t affect the overall appearance of a piece of work directly, it contributed tremendously to the construction process of the dome. This was a hoist that worked with the help of massive ropes, chestnut poles and an ox. When finally completed it was able to hoist materials consisting of marble, brick, stone and mortar weighing an estimated 70 million pounds- obviously being a huge help to the overall construction of the dome. The ox-hoist was just one of Brunelleschi’s many genius inventions that helped solved of the challenges architects and builders faced during the construction process of the dome.
ReplyDeleteI believe Filippo Brunelleschi is truly a genius. In a time when innovation was challenged by skepticism and criticism, Filippo challenged normality through his genious solutions. The ox-hoist is one example of complex technological understanding that supports this statement. An answer to one of many problems surrounding the construction of the Santa Maria del Fiore, the ox-hoist demonstrates power and efficiency. Two principle characteristics of this invention illustrate ingenuity. First, the ox-hoist featured a screw that raised and lowered the rotor. This allowed for objects to be transported in opposite directions without the repositioning of the ox, an animal that only moved clockwise. Next, the hoist displayed a multiple part system, which allowed for variations in load size. This technology drastically improved the construction efforts of such a massive project. The ox-hoist is just one example of Fillipo's genious.
ReplyDeleteI believe Filippo was a genius because his innovations were original and ahead of his time. His greatest innovation was the ox-lift. It was an ingenious solution to the problems that arose with transporting the heavy materials high into the air to build the dome. The lift was powered by oxen instead of by humans so it could lift heavier materials more quickly than the standard lifts of his time. It also consisted of a complex system of gears and pulleys that was far ahead the technical advancements of his time. This original innovation of the lift technology of his time proves that Fillipo Brunelleschi truly was a genius.
ReplyDeleteAs well as a multitude of my peers above, I as well believe Filippo is a genius. As Amanda Byrne stated, his most innovative invention was the ox-hoist. It provided a fast way to transport the heavy blocks to the top of the dome. An obvious contribution to his being of a genius is his building of the dome.
ReplyDeleteFilippo Brunelleschi was indeed a genius. His ox powered hoist was a spectacular innovation which was revolutionary for its time. However, I believe Brunelleschi’s method of building the dome best displayed his originality of thought. Filippo was the first to believe that a dome, even one the size of the Santa Maria del Fiore’s, could be built without an internal support made for centering the dome. This idea of his was seen as outrageous by most. Never the less, Brunelleschi was able to apply his concept to the immense dome and successfully build it. All in all Filippo was truly a genius. He had his ups and downs such as the vessel he built to transfer the marble, but in the end his ingenuity and incredible train of thought propelled him into becoming one of the most influential men in his time.
ReplyDeleteFilippo Brunelleschi was indeed a genius, especially due to his ingenuity and ability to turn his visions into reality. Although many of his creative ideas seemed to have only been a fluke, Filippo created many clever innovations that not only helped him overcome obstacles, but also proved to the public that he had accomplished the task of designing the dome without just luck. One of his most important and implausible inventions was the ox-hoist. Consisting of a complex arrangement of pulleys, screws, wood, and gears this machine made it possible for thousands of pounds to be lifted into the air in minutes, which at the time was an impressive rate for such weight to be lifted. His innovations were remarkable for the time period. I believe only a true genius, such as Brunelleschi, could create such incredible innovations and influence future architects for centuries to come.
ReplyDeleteFilippo Brunelleschi was a true genius for his work and innovations on the completion of the Santa Maria del Fiore. Transporting heavy building equipment hundreds of feet off the ground proved to be a great struggle for the builders of the cathedral. Filippo's ox-hoist was very effective because it could lift up to 70 million pounds of building material. This complicated device improved the accuracy and rate at which the cathedral was built. I agree with Paul in saying that the ox-hoist, "an unheard of machine"(57), paved the way for new devices. Without the ox-hoist, other inventions like the castello, a crane created by Filippo, would not have been built. It also inspired other architects and engineers, such as Leonardo da Vinci. Brunelleschi's creativity, originality, and commitment with the hoist and other inventions was a huge success in helping to build the Santa Maria del Fiore. Through the creation of the ox-hoist, Flippo's genius showed.
ReplyDeleteI believe Filippo Brunelleschi was indeed a genius. He has created numerous inventions and ideas to his community, including the ox-hoist. This invention from Filippo transported heavy materials and was "centuries ahead of the technical understanding of the time." His thoughts made the Santa Maria del Fiore seem ahead of its time and a truly remarkable building. Therefore, I think that Filippo Brunelleschi was a genius.
ReplyDeleteI believe Filippo was a genius because whenever there was a challenge presented to him, he found a way to 'solve' it. An example of this is the dome of Santa Maria Del Fiore. Filippo found a way not only to construct the dome but to do it without centering it. Then another problem came his way, how to get the heavy materials needed for the dome up to where they are building the dome. He came up with a genius solution for this too. He created the ox-hoist that used oxen instead of humans and on top of that he made the hoist go in reverse which saved a lot of time. Filippo not only solved the seemingly unsolvable problems of the dome and created the ox-hoist, but solved many problems of his day, making him a genius.
ReplyDeleteBecause of his achievements in creating the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore, Filippo can be considered a genius. The design for the dome showed his incredible imagination and ability to think outside the box. Although many of his other ideas shown throughout the book failed, the dome is still a great achievement that can be considered genius. Also, the new innovations, including the ox-hoist, allowed the building of the dome to be possible. His other ideas, including the Il Badalone, although they failed, were creative ideas that deserve much credit.
ReplyDeleteBecause of his numerous accomplishments, Filippo should be considered a genius. Originality of thought played a huge role in what made him so famous. He was able to come up with solutions for many projects that were seen as impossible to complete. For the construction of the Dome of Santa Maria del Fiore, many men worked to figure out ways to lift large loads of materials needed for the completion of the buliding. No one's ideas were as successful as Filippo's ideas. He created the ox hoist, a machine that proved to be way more intricate than any other machine created in this era, working in reverse. Not one of his ideas were similar to ideas that were brought up before. Filippo was a genius and his works should continue to be recognized.
ReplyDeleteFilippo is a genius based on his many innovations. He was described as being way ahead of his time. His originality is one characteristic that made him great. One of his most superb inventions was the ox-hoist. Without the ox hoist, moving heavy materials up into the dome would have been almost impossible. With this invention, it made the entire process of building the domemuchmoreefficient. His idea of the ox hoist was a catalyst that enabled many other architects to expand the realm of possibility for their inventions.
ReplyDeleteI believe Fillipo Brunelleschi was a true genius not only because of his originality of thought, but also because of his wit and profound knowledge. His innovations were way ahead of his time and astounded everyone who witnessed them. I think that his greatest innovation that proved his ingenuity was the ox-hoist. This complex structure was built like a clock with many screws and pulleys. It also included a reversible gear, this concept was unheard of until the ox-hoist and it was very advanced. Brunelleschi’s device saved them a lot of time and it was a durable machine built specifically for that job. This was only one of Brunelleschi’s many innovations, which facilitated the completion of the dome. It is easy to see that Brunelleschi really was a genius. Although he made some mistakes along the way, Brunelleschi’s many innovations more than compensate for it. His completion of the dome, without using any visible means of support, speaks for itself.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Filippo was a genius because he thought like no one in that time period had thought before. His ideas to build the Dome were revolutionary and were never thought of before. Most said that it would collapse but he pushed through the opposition and build the dome that changed architecture in that time. He even figured out his own ways to lift up the huge pieces to build the dome.
ReplyDeleteFilippo is a true genius becauseof his constructon of the done without any wooden centering. His construction of the dome was the first of its kind and completely defied the laws of the earth as others thought at the time. Another accomplishment of Fillipo was the development of the ox hiost. This innovation made the lifting of heavy loads to higher parts of the dome easier and much faster, allowing the dome to be constructed. The ox hoist used far more advanced technology and improved the making of other bulidings. Fillipo's innovations have advanced architecture making him a genius.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Filippo was a true genius. Throughout his life he was able to create designs which were far ahead of his time. He consistently beat out his peers in competitions to solve problems surrounding the Dome. Another sign of his genius was that Filippo was so talented in multiple fields. He was not only an architectural genius, but also a renowned artist. I believe Filippo's greatest innovation was his ox driven crane. This design was unlike any previous cranes used, and the Dome would not have been able to be constructed without it. The crane could raise several tons of materials at a time, and was much quicker than any other hoists of its time.
ReplyDeleteBrunelleschi's dome is indeed a work of art. The size of the dome, along with its beauty is what makes it art. Art can be admired and criticized by many different people but it is clear that the dome is art. It always has been and remains to this day a tourist attraction. The dome brings in people from all over the world to admire the cathedral. In my opinion everything can be seen as art depending on who you talk to, however with a piece of such massive size and beauty the dome created by Fillipo Brunelleschi can be seen as nothing short of a masterpiece. Just like a painter making a painting, Brunelleschi began with nothing but a few tools and with those tools he created art. The only difference in the kind of art is Fillipo's piece of art is over 300 feet tall. The dome, no matter how anyone else sees it, will remain in my mind as a masterpiece.
ReplyDeleteFilipipo was a true genius his ideas were numerous and useful. Though some of his ideas were based of roman principles his application of them was perfect. The ox hoist in particular struck me as genius. This device used pulleys cranks ratchets and more to hoist huge stones into the air. This hoist is a giant step in the world of heavy machinery and I frankly think it was cool that they were able to do that so long ago.
